Bleaching earth: from refining to recycling

Bleaching earth plays an important role in the European edible oil industry. A mineral that purifies vegetable oil and, after use, gains new value as a raw material for biofuels. The growing focus on recycling and biofuels creates room for new product flows. For Van den Bosch as a logistics service provider, various logistics processes come together here.

Bleaching earth is a mineral with a highly porous structure. This allows it to bind unwanted substances. Refineries use the powder to further purify vegetable oils and fats and achieve the desired product quality. Bleaching earth is used on a large scale, particularly within the edible oil industry. Examples include the refining of palm, coconut, soybean and rapeseed oil.

European network

Bleaching earth is produced at a limited number of locations and therefore often needs to be transported over longer distances to refineries. Van den Bosch transports the fine powder in bulk from various production locations across Europe.

For this, we use, among other equipment, our specialised 40 ft silo pressure containers. As the European market leader in the transport of dry powders, Van den Bosch has the equipment, network and expertise. By organising transport intermodally wherever possible, longer distances can be covered by rail or water. Road transport is mainly used for the first and last part of the journey.

Floating stock

For refineries, transport is not the only important factor. The continuous availability of bleaching earth also plays an important role. After all, the refining process continues, while demand for the product can change. Having stock of the product available is therefore crucial.

Through floating stock, we bring the stock closer to the end user. Loaded containers are strategically positioned near refineries and can then be delivered on demand. This creates a flexible buffer in the supply chain.

Circular logistics chain

The logistics opportunities do not end after delivery. During the refining process, spent bleaching earth (SBE) is created: used bleaching earth that can still contain significant amounts of residual oil. Instead of treating this flow solely as a residual product, the oil present is recovered and reused as a raw material, for example for the production of biodiesel and HVO.

It is precisely this combination that offers logistics opportunities. This creates a logistics chain in which different bulk flows reinforce one another. By connecting dry and liquid bulk, specialised equipment, floating stock and intermodal transport, Van den Bosch can organise multiple links within the same supply chain. Bleaching earth is therefore not only an important mineral for refineries, but also part of an increasingly circular logistics chain.
