Precision work far above the Arctic Circle

“A great example of what we can achieve with teamwork”

Van den Bosch recently played a key role in the major maintenance of the Coldbox installation in Hammerfest, Norway. Global energy transport requires smart logistics solutions and high-quality craftsmanship. Thanks to our knowledge, international network and close cooperation with partners, we ensured a flawless operation: from emptying to refilling the installation with perlite.

Natural gas is extracted from under the Barents Sea and transported via pipelines across the seabed to Hammerfest. There, it is liquefied so that it can be transported worldwide by ship. To make this possible, the gas must be cooled to a temperature of -163 degrees Celsius. This is done in the so-called Coldbox, an installation that must remain well insulated in order to maintain the extreme cold. The insulation of this Coldbox consists of perlite, a special material that prevents heat loss.

“Major maintenance is required every few years”, says project manager Theo van Helvoort. “Together with our partner Chemrock, the producer of the perlite, we ensure that the Coldbox is completely emptied so that engineers can do their work. Afterwards, we refill the installation with new perlite.”

Teamwork

The project is divided into two phases: emptying and filling. Emptying the Coldbox took about a week. “Filling, on the other hand, was done much faster,” says Van Helvoort. "Because downtime at the factory is very costly, it is essential that the Coldbox is emptied and filled quickly. Together with our Belgian partner, we have developed methods that make this possible, while at the same time complying with very strict safety requirements. In just 39 hours, we managed to unload 117 silo containers. A new record! A great example of what we can achieve with teamwork," emphasises Van Helvoort.

By water and by road

The transport of the perlite made the operation even more challenging. Hammerfest is Norway's northernmost town, more than 3,000 kilometres from our head office in Erp. “Due to this great distance, most of the containers were transported by ship, using our own chartered cargo ship. This ship was completely filled with Van den Bosch containers. The rest of the containers were transported north by road using eight trucks. This not only guaranteed speed, but also reliability in delivery.”

Expertise

The operation was large-scale: 122 silo containers, twelve tipper chassis and eight trucks were deployed to get the job done. In addition, a total of eighteen drivers and four coordinators from our branches in Hungary, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands were involved in this project. In addition, a partnership was established with a local Norwegian transport company, which took care of transport from the port in Norway to the Coldbox.

“Together, they formed a close-knit team that distinguished itself through professional expertise, a strong focus on safety and excellent cooperation. This was also noticed by the customer, who told us they were impressed by the way we carried out this complex project”, concludes Van Helvoort.
