UNICEF in action against malnutrition Benin

November 20th 2017 - UNICEF advances children's rights worldwide. Van den Bosch Transporten has supported the activities of the UN organization for children's rights since 2011. For 2017-2018, the support will go among other things to a food programme in Benin that focuses on fighting child malnutrition. So far UNICEF has booked good results in the West African country.

More than half of the population of Benin has to survive on just one dollar a day. Also because of that, child nutrition is very poor. Still 34 per cent of all children under five are chronically malnourished. This problem is especially large in the northern regions. UNICEF is committed to the prevention and treatment of child malnutrition.

Healthy Food, Healthy Kids
UNICEF makes sure that the situation of young kids and mothers improves via good health care, healthy food and clean water. The goal is to give children a good start, so that they in turn will be able to take care of their children properly later. Food is one of the priorities. Healthy food provides the basis for a healthy future, hence the name of the programme: ‘Healthy Food, Healthy Kids’.

Red/yellow/green measuring tape
UNICEF has made good results in Benin. 2,419 health workers have been trained to check and treat as many children as possible for malnutrition. UNICEF works with the so-called red/yellow/green measuring tape to measure the status of chronic malnutrition for every child and to decide what is needed to get stronger. 76% of the villages is now able to provide help in the areas where there is malnutrition. UNICEF will of course continue this work and make sure that the local population gets enough knowledge and skills to improve the children's nutrition.
