BBS (Behavior Based Safety)

Safety is a word very often used at van den Bosch, also in this manual. It is not just a word, it is a notion, something you should always be aware of during work or activities at work. It is a very wide notion. Getting out of the truck, which shoes you wear, it is all about safety.

Generally, it comes down to asking yourself questions and continuously asking them. The place where you stand when unloading; could things go wrong; which things could go wrong; where is a safe place in case something goes wrong when unloading. It all comes down to the same thing over and over again: asking questions.

Be aware that things can go wrong, however often you have done them, however much routine it is to you. The possibility that work pressure or a distraction catches you just a tiny bit off guard, is always around the corner. Be aware that even someone carrying out a certain operation ten times a day, may carry it out wrongly once or twice at some point in time.

Rule blindness. The word may not exist as such, but it means a mistake caused by routine operations. Probably each week you will go to that one particular unloading place and of course you know the routine there perfectly, but be aware that you may forget things as well. You should check each time you enter the premises if you remember the rules and requirements for that particular company. When you are at a certain location often, you will become blind to that sort of things. Pretend each time again, as if you come there for the first time.

On the next page please find a valuable piece of text. It seems perfectly logical, but please take it with you and use it in your daily work.

When you encounter an unsafe or possibly unsafe situation at a customer or anywhere, please report it to your planner via the board computer. He or she can report it internally after which action may be taken. Please take the time to do so, it may prevent a lot of trouble.
